Remember that ViewMaster you had as a little kid? Well its precursor, the stereograph, is currently making waves, thanks to the New York Public Library. To give you a bit of background, stereographs are slightly varied photographs that are presented in pairs, allowing a two-dimensional image to look three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope. The NYPL recently simplified the process by creating an online platform, the Stereogranimator, that converts the slides into animated GIFs. Visit their archive to try it out for yourself---there's a cool 40,000 stereographs to choose from.

That, my friend, is a dark side

I try not to let too much time surpass between creepy blog posts, so I felt fortunate to read about photographer Christopher Payne today. In his photo series Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, Payne documented 70 abandoned institutions across 30 different states. His statement of work references the portrayal of these facilities in books and movies, how they are often the places of nightmarish squalor and abuse, but in actuality, they were formally 'monuments of civic pride, built with noble intentions by leading architects and physicians, who envisioned the asylums as places of refuge, therapy, and healing.' His photos only underscore this belief by showing how these self-contained cities provided every necessity possible, and even go above and beyond to maintain a modicum of normalcy with things like beauty parlors and bowling alleys.

The creators of London-based Tube Crush and New York City's Subway Crush is just hours away from releasing BostonTCrush.com, a website that allows T riders to upload photos of handsome Bostonians for the general public to comment on and rate appropriately. In an interview with the Metro, co-founder Stephen Motion says that the company has tried to set a standard that is 'complimentary' and not 'creepy.'

On this day, I'm usually the recipient of a half birthday cake, a hearty version of "Happy Birthday to You" (cut off mid 'birth') and some really rad presents. The gift below, a lovely old seltzer bottle, was sourced from the Lancaster Flea Market. Please! If you ever find yourself in Central Mass., track this place down. The people are odd, the place is crowded, but if you're lucky, the little old lady in booth 36 will pull out some old 78's and crank her victrola to life for you.

I really hate owning up to this, but I'm kind of a scrooge when it comes to Christmas. I mean, sure, I love some of the little things, like sparkly ornaments and spiked eggnog, but I find the holiday itself a little overwhelming. Usually, I'm too worried about impending credit card debt and the reactions to my carefully chosen presents to really enjoy the day itself. So, I find peace in the little, unassuming tasks of the holiday season, like making cookies, hanging gilded mistletoe (and subsequently trapping my dear bf under it), and addressing our annual holiday cards. But the thing I love most? Wrapping presents. There truly is an art to it, don't you think?

I'm loving the stationary goods from MaeMae Paperie. Kind of makes me wish I owned instead of rented so I could invest in their adorable return address stamps.

There is nothing I love more than urban exploration, and finding the best new restaurants, venues, and watering holes along the way. Yelp offers some helpful suggestions, but it's hard to gauge the quality of a place from a handful of reviews. Like, Bill C. from the South End may love that new Tapas joint for the same reasons I find it abominable. Cue Stamped, a new iOS app that allows you to connect with friends and share reviews for everything from the last book you read to the new pizzeria in Back Bay. Check it our for yourself here.

The sigh that blew me forward

The Sami people (also known by their exonym, 'Laplanders') are the indigenous people of Sápmi, a territory that encompasses parts of far northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. While they pursue a variety of livelihoods, like fishing and fur trapping, they are best known for herding reindeer, which is an integral part of their culture. The photos below are part of a collection by photographer and Fulbright Scholar Erika Larsen, who is currently living with a Sami family in Sweden. Mo 'stache, mo money

I'm usually pretty jazzed about facial hair on its own, but when it's paired with a good cause and a stellar branding identity to boot, well, I'm sold. After a gentle nudge from my future brother-in-law, I visited the Movember site for the first time and was surprised at how well it was done! The vintage fonts, muted colors and overall lumberjackness (I tried to use lumberjack-y, but it sounded counterintuitive) makes for a pretty impressive package. Hell, I want to grow a mustache now!!!! But I can't, so I donated to aforementioned awesome future bro-in-law and you should too.

Let's do it for the children (quite literally, I just brushed up on my prostate knowledge here).

Totally creepy, yet slightly awesome project of the day

The Willard Asylum, a state run mental institution located in Willard, New York, was in operation from 1910 though the early 1960s. In 1995, staff members of the New York State Museum were given free reign to explore the building, which led to the discovery of an entire attic full of suitcases, filled with the personal belongings of admitted patients. Sadly, the presence of these suitcases have led people to believe that these individuals never actually checked out of the asylum.

In order to document the history of the institution, Jon Crispin, a New York photographer with a serious love of ephemera, has committed to photographing the suitcases and their contents. Follow along on his blog.

I scooped up this scarf at Madewell after I saw it hung from the rafters of the Newbury Street store. I originally wanted to frame it, thinking that it was an interesting piece of textile art until a salesgirl pointed me towards a folded pile on a shelf. Ooooppps, embarrassing for me. It's actually part of a larger collection, the Storyteller scarves, 'inspired by old-timey typography and vintage posters.'

Oh yeah. I'm totally digging this earthy, farm-to-table wedding in Tarrytown, New York. The ceremony and reception, both held at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, featured lovely handmade touches by the bride and elements that represented the couple's relationship (like the mala garlands worn by each guest at the ceremony).

If you're a resident of the Chelsea area, or happen to frequent the High Line, you may have noticed a new baseline added to the neighborhood's soundtrack. I am, of course, talking about the low pulsating loop track that's playing in conjuncture with David Byrne's (YES! that David Byrne's) new installation piece. The exhibit, aptly named 'Tight Spot,' consists of a 48-by-20 foot inflatable globe that's smooshed up against the steel framework of the High Line, much like a passenger on the 4 train during rush hour.

The installation, brought to us courtesy of the Pace Gallery (which was actually founded in BOSTON in the 60's), will be open to the public until October 1st.
